State Spotlight: Vermont WAP
The Vermont Weatherization Assistance Program won a 2017 HUD Secretary’s Healthy Homes Award. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) made their selection based on excellence in making indoor environments healthier through healthy homes research, education, and program delivery. HUD focused especially on entities that serve diverse, low to moderate income communities. The Vermont WAP implemented an initiative called One Touch, which pairs healthy home assessments with all state-supported weatherization projects. The One Touch initiative also coordinates the efforts of several state agencies as well as other public and private partners.

Local Spotlight: Piedmont Triad Regional Council
Piedmont Triad Regional Council (PTRC), a WAP agency in Kernersville, North Carolina, received an innovation award from the National Association of Development Organizations (NADO). The NADO Innovation Awards program recognizes regional development organizations for improving the nation’s regions and local communities. PTRC started an initiative called the Collaboration for Greener Homes which partnered their traditional WAP program with the Helping Home Fund of the utility Duke Energy. The partnership supplied elderly, disabled, and households with children with energy efficient appliances. PTRC WAP was able to serve 400 households in seven counties.
