NASCSP and the Community Action Partnership (CAP) are pleased to announce that September 27, 2012 marks the one millionth home weatherized under the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) since April 2009! With the huge influx of funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Recovery Act), WAP was able to weatherize more homes in three years than ever before.
Two states—one eastern, one western—will hold site demonstration events to showcase the technical work done by hundreds of agencies and thousands of local crews across the country to reach this goal. Representing the east is the Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley (CACLV) in Pennsylvania, and representing the west is the South Central Community Action Partnership (SSCAP) in Idaho. Both will host local and national leaders as well as NASCSP staff at their events. Additionally, Don Mathis, President and CEO of CAP, will attend the Pennsylvania demonstration.
To help celebrate this milestone, let others know the great accomplishments in your own State by using the hashtag #1Mhomes on Twitter. Not on social media? Leave us your stories in our Comment Section below and NASCSP will tweet them for you!
As a follow up event, the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) will host a briefing on the success of WAP at the U.S. Capitol Visitor’s Center in Washington, D.C. from 11:00-12:30 on Friday September 28th. Speakers include Advocates for The Other America General Counsel Brad Penney, National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) Director Mark Wolfe, Center for American Progress Action Fund Director of Clean Energy Investment Richard W. Caperton, Association for Energy Affordability Executive Director David Hepinstall, and JAI Associates Principal Josh Joseph, Ph.D. We welcome all who are able to attend. More information can be found on the EESI website: http://www.eesi.org/092812weatherization.
The one millionth home celebration is just the beginning in highlighting the success of the WAP. October is Energy Awareness Month and October 30th is Weatherization Day, a perfect time to let your community, congressional and state representatives, partners, and media know how successful your program is.
