Celebrating 50 Years of the Weatherization Assistance Program

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), celebrating five decades of helping households reduce energy costs, improve home safety and comfort, and increase energy efficiency.

Since 1976, the Weatherization Network has delivered meaningful results across the country. Today, Weatherization:

  • Has served more than 7.2 million families since the program began.
  • Weatherizes approximately 32,000 homes each year using U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funds.
  • Helps participating households save an average of $372 or more annually.
  • Supports approximately 8,500 jobs nationwide.

These numbers tell an important story, but Weatherization’s impact goes further. For families across the country, it means safer homes, lower energy costs, greater comfort, and increased stability.

As we celebrate 50 years of WAP, NASCSP recognizes the state offices, local agencies, weatherization professionals, and partners who have made this work possible and continue advancing the program’s impact nationwide.
