Steven L. Westphal Celebrates 27 Years of Community Impact
Finding Purpose in Weatherization Work
When Steven L. Westphal first got to know the workers in the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP), he saw something deeper than just another contracting opportunity. He saw a way for his company, Westphal & Sons Inc., to make a real difference. Based in Idaho, Steven has spent the last 27 years contributing his expertise as an electrician to a program that transforms lives and strengthens communities.
Getting started wasn’t without its challenges. “The biggest hurdle for me was learning about the paperwork and keeping on top of it,” Steven shared. Navigating the administrative side of weatherization required persistence, but it didn’t deter him. For Steven, the rewards far outweighed the effort.
Why Weatherization Keeps Him Going
So, what keeps him motivated after nearly three decades? “We continue to bid and do jobs because we see a need in the community to share our expertise in the electrical aspect,” he explained. In an industry where many contractors opt for new construction work because it’s easier, Steven and his team took a different path. “We see the need to help and give something back to our community.” That commitment to service is what drives him each morning and keeps Westphal & Sons Inc. deeply rooted in weatherization work.
Advice for Other Contractors
Steven’s advice for contractors considering working with the Weatherization Assistance Program is both practical and heartfelt. “You have to have a place for it in your heart because you’re not going to get rich doing it,” he said. For him, weatherization isn’t just a job, it’s a mission.
