The Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development (COAD) is taking a significant step towards a more sustainable future by integrating solar power into its weatherization programs. This innovative approach will not only reduce energy costs for Appalachian residents but also create new job opportunities and promote clean energy solutions.
COAD’s new initiative, SOAR: Solar for Ohio’s Appalachian Region, is made possible by the Sustainable Energy Resources for Consumers (SERC) grant from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. This project will see the installation of 75 prefabricated, pole-mounted solar arrays on homes that have previously undergone weatherization services. These solar arrays are expected to generate up to 20% of a home’s annual energy needs, further reducing energy costs for residents.
In addition to the solar initiative, COAD is expanding its training programs at the Ohio Weatherization Training Center (OWTC). A partnership with IGS Energy will introduce solar installation training to the curriculum, equipping trainees with the skills needed to install and maintain solar systems.
COAD’s commitment to community development and sustainability is evident in its partnerships with local organizations and businesses. By collaborating with local artists to design solar array pole wraps, COAD is adding a unique aesthetic touch to the initiative while also supporting local talent.
Weatherization programs, like those offered by COAD, have a profound impact on the lives of low-income individuals and families. By improving energy efficiency and reducing energy costs, these programs help to alleviate energy burden and promote economic stability.
As COAD continues to innovate and expand its services, it is clear that the organization is committed to building a brighter future for the Appalachian region. By embracing renewable energy and investing in workforce development, COAD is empowering communities and driving positive change.
