Weatherization Assistance Program Success Story: Customer Impact in Kentucky

KCEOC
Background: The KCEOC Community Action Partnership (KCEOC) is committed to strengthening communities and creating lasting change. KCEOC serves 16 counties in eastern and central Kentucky and provides weatherization services in 12 of those counties. In 2023, the team helped make 47 homes more comfortable and energy efficient.
Ms. Basham’s Story: In Kentucky, homeowner Ms. Basham was doing everything they could to cut energy costs. She and her partner sealed windows with plastic and kept the thermostat at 68°F. But even with those efforts, her electric bill averaged $146 a month and peaked at $258 during the winter months. Despite running the heat, her home still felt cold and uncomfortable.
Weatherization Impact: KCEOC’s weatherization team stepped in with a full energy audit to find the best ways to improve the energy efficiency of the home. They installed a new heat pump with a programmable thermostat, sealed ductwork, added LED lighting, reduced air leaks, and insulated the attic and floor. They also installed a bathroom fan to help control moisture. These upgrades made Ms. Basham’s home warmer and gave her peace of mind. Her winter heating bills dropped from $258 to $150, and she can finally keep her home at a comfortable temperature. Now, she can face Kentucky’s coldest nights, knowing her home will stay safe and warm.

In the words of the program participant, “I thank God every night for what weatherization has done for my home.”
